What Tallow Actually Is
Most people know us for grass-fed beef, but over the last few years, another part of the farm has quietly become one of our favorites: tallow skincare.
Tallow is rendered beef fat, specifically made from suet, the hard white fat found around the kidneys and loins of the cow. It’s one of the most nutrient-dense parts of the animal and has been used for generations in cooking, soap making, candles, and skincare long before modern products filled shelves with synthetic ingredients.
At Clover Farms, we use suet from our own 100% grass-fed, grass-finished cattle raised right here on pasture in Florida.
Why We Started Rendering Suet
Like a lot of things on the farm, this started with one simple question: How can we better use the whole animal?
We believe in nose-to-tail farming and respecting every part of the animal. Years ago, we started rendering our suet into tallow instead of letting such a valuable resource go unused. What surprised us was how incredible the finished tallow turned out to be.
We worked hard to perfect a very clean tallow with none of that heavy “beefy” smell people sometimes expect. What we were left with was a smooth, nourishing ingredient that became the foundation for an entire skincare line.
What started as a practical farm project quickly became something we’re genuinely proud of.
Why Grass-Fed Tallow Matters
Not all tallow is created equal.
Because our cattle are 100% grass-fed and grass-finished, the tallow naturally contains beneficial fatty acids and fat-soluble vitamins that make it especially nourishing for the skin.
Our cattle are:
- Raised on pasture
- Never fed grain
- Raised without added hormones
- Raised without antibiotics
- Part of a regenerative farming system focused on soil and animal health
That quality starts in the pasture and carries all the way into the finished skincare products.
The Problem with Most Skincare
Take a look at the label on many skincare products and it can feel more like reading a chemistry textbook than something you want to put on your skin.
A lot of products are filled with synthetic fragrances, preservatives, dyes, stabilizers, and ingredients most people can’t pronounce. We wanted to create something different.
Simple ingredients. Nutrient-dense ingredients. Products made from a source we actually know and trust because we raised it ourselves.
Why Tallow Works so Well
Here’s the interesting part. Tallow’s fatty acid profile is very similar to the natural oils our skin already produces. That means it absorbs beautifully instead of just sitting on the surface feeling greasy.
Tallow is naturally rich in:
- Vitamins A, D, E, and K
- Stearic acid
- Oleic acid
- Palmitic acid
These nutrients help:
